Prema izvješću UN-a Monitoring the Impact of Economic Crisis on Crime tijekom ekonomske krize 2008-2009 pojačala se kriminalna aktivnost građana te je jasno da ekonomska klima utječe na količinu kriminalnih radnji građana. Građani već imaju putem nacionalnih televizija dostupne informacije o tome hoće li sutra pokisnuti, kako da se obuku te kako će se osjećati, a s obzirom da iz Hrvatske ekonomska kriza nikako da odseli, nije zgorega uputiti ih u koje dijelove grada da ne zalaze.
Projekt Sunčano uz mogućnost razbojništva započeo je prikupljati podatke 2010. kao reakcija na vremenske prognoze koje uz klasičnu prognozu sadrže i biometeorološki segment, odnosno predviđaju i zdravstveno te emocionalno stanje građana tijekom narednih dana. U sklopu projekta Giba je kreirao aplikaciju koja prikuplja podatke Policijske uprave zagrebačke o kriminalu u Zagrebu. Za svaki događaj policija objavljuje vrijeme, lokaciju i vrstu kriminala, a Gibina aplikacija na temelju tih podataka prikuplja i podatke Državnog hidrometeorološkog zavoda o vremenskim uvjetima u trenutku kriminalnog djela na lokaciji izvršenja. Na temelju vremenske prognoze i policijske statistike, aplikacija prognozira vjerojatnost zločina u pojedinim zagrebačkim kvartovima.

U suvremenim pejzažima Mihaela Gibe alat i oblik proizvodnje poprilično su updatirani. Screen je preuzeo ulogu platna, kist je zamijenjen PHP aplikacijom, podaci prikupljeni softverom na webu određuju sadržaj slike, značenje pojedinih simbola nije prepušteno mašti publike nego striktno programski pridruženo određenoj dimenziji društva odnosno informaciji o njoj.
Ti pejzaži, dakle, nisu niti figurativni niti apstraktni, niti uljani, niti akvarelni, nego virtualni. Motivima ne odaju porijeklo autora, atmosfera ne odiše njegovim senzibilitetom, nema govora o osobnosti a pogotovo ne o intimizmu. Dapače struktura tih pejzaža izravna je posljedica brojeva. Gdje je nestao slikar, zavapit će ljubitelji klasičnijih pristupa. Kako vrednovati izložbu na kojoj pastoralna tematika ilustrira dnevno politički kontekst, a seoska idila utjelovljuje intenzitet kriminala? Što vrijedi slika kojoj tek suha informacija u legendi ustanovljuje smisao?
Tako je, upravo je egzaktnost, numerička ili bilo koja druga, u umjetnosti bila više nego nedobrodošla, ona je stajala nasuprot subjektivnom viđenju ili autorskoj interpretaciji na kojoj je pak počivao kreativni nerv. Pjesnika nije zanimala statistika nego vjetar, vihori strasti, bujice bezumlja, oceani ljubavi i magle nedoumice. No, za razliku od Byrona, upravo je statistika ključna izvedbena poluga Gibinog autorskog izraza. Jer Giba, za razliku od Glihe, pejzaž koristi namjesto grafikona – kamenje predstavlja kulturu, brda gospodarstvo, znanost oblak, drveće sport, a planine zdravlje. Statističku tabelu zamjenjuje neboder, umjesto točaka ptice lete njegovim koordinatnim sustavom.

Ustanoviti mjernu jedinicu ili korelaciju između pojedinih relevantnih ekonomskih i političkih čimbenika nije Gibin izum. Kao što to nije niti web aplikacija koja pretražuje razne stranice i po određenim tagovima prikuplja podatke i potom ih slaže u pojedine pretince koji se zatim sudaraju s drugim pretincima proizvodeći treći podatak kao rezultat prethodna dva. Naravno da je baratanje tim sustavom nužno, ali je također nužno i nasloviti pojedine pretince. Odrediti parametre odnosno tagove. Pa bi se već moglo govoriti da njegov izum jest sučeljavanje jednih, konkretnih ili specifičnih podataka sa drugima pri čemu se ti podaci transponiraju u odgovarajuće vizualne interpretacije koje neprestano prate njihove promjene. Naravno da to više nije niti pejzaž niti slika uopće, nego vizual koji ima jedini cilj prispodobiti ključne elemente što uvjetuju okolnosti našeg postojanja u ovome trenutku. Taj je realitet numeričan, njegova je istina najpreciznije iskazana u statistici, međutim, mi rijetko obraćamo pažnju na statistiku, pogled nam prelazi preko brojeva bez zastajkivanja ili pak neprestane pretvorbe tih brojeva u doživljaj praznog ili punog želuca. Brojevi putem kojih Giba dolazi do slike okvirno su nam poznati ali je život kroz svakodnevicu svojih konkretnih uprizorenja ipak bliži i intenzivniji i ti nam brojevi smjesta odlaze u sekundarnu (ili još nižu) razinu percepcije.
Pa bi ovo, između ostalog, bilo i još jedno dodatno raskrinkavanje oblika ponašanja ekonomsko političkog sustava kojem je osnovna poluga (a možda čak i cilj) maskiranje vitalnih pojedinosti u nerazmrsivo klupko brojeva i fraza.
A izabrana forma pejzaža efikasna je u raskrinkavanju stoga što je pejzaž uobičajeni lukrativni moment, česti ikonografski ukras dnevnih boravaka, uz regal i sjedeću garnituru gotovo izgradbeni element ideje dnevnih boravaka. Gibina namjera, međutim, nije kritika građanskog ukusa, nego korištenje klasičnog obrasca za vizualni prijevod činjenice kako su i ti brojevi, svakako znatno manje vidljiv ali jednako prisutan, izgradbeni element okolnosti naših života.
Pa su se tako krupne cifre jednokratno otuđenih miliona ili milijardi što se kradu na najvišim političkim ili ekonomskim razinama nedostupnima običnom čovjeku u Gibinom vizualnom transkriptu pretvorile u pitoreskni gradić od 73.000 kuća. Te su cifre s druge strane sučeljene i sa sitnim lipama što siromašnom pojedincu sustav kroz svoje razgranate pipke oduzima svakodnevno i neprestano. I jedino dosadna i nepopularna statistika zbraja sve te pojedince. I ta je statistika odjednom postala dostupna, izdajnički virtualni svemir u svom nepreglednom prostranstvu sadrži i sve te, ljudskom oku nevidljive, satelitiće i asteroide što nas tuku i radnim danom i vikendom. Sadržavao je on njih, istina, i ranije, samo što ih je sada neki novi teleskop koji se zove PHP aplikacija jednim pritiskom na odgovarajuću tipku sabrao, a Giba njihov misteriozni zbroj pritiskom na drugu tipku pretvorio u katove nebodera koji raste.

Ali gdje je u svemu tome umjetnik, pitaju se i dalje tvrdokorni klasičari, što on radi dok mu stroj danonoćno generira pejzaže?
Sklada novu kompoziciju. Širi antene i hvata valove negodovanja kojima vrvi eter. Izlazi na ulicu i osluškuje što šapuću mase dok odgovorni grme iste parole. Obilazi punktove nezadovoljstva, registrira razinu ispražnjenosti trezora, probija se kroz gužvu besposlenih i zajedno s njima prima tektonske udare globalne sekunde.

Sredstva obmane i poslušnosti – izložba u Salonu Galić

U Salonu Galić u Splitu, u srijedu, 20. veljače, s početkom u 19,30 sati, otvara se izložba ‘Sredstva obmane i poslušnosti’ Mihaela Gibe. Izložba ostaje otvorena do 3. ožujka.

Najnovijim radovima pod nazivom Sredstva obmane i poslušnosti Mihael Giba nastavlja s kritikom suvremenog društva. Na tragu ranijih radova u kojima je umjetnik radio s različitim načinima vizualizacije podataka, nastaje rad u kojem ispisuje stranice temeljnih državnih, crkvenih ili poslovnih dokumenata, no njihovim preklapanjem jasnoća teksta se gubi, sadržaj postaje jedva prepoznatljiv, a time i potpuno besmislen.

Takvom vrlo jednostavnom strategijom, polazeći iz vlastite pozicije naglašava svakodnevne situacije u kojima se nalazimo, vođeni i dirigirani nametnutim postavkama, od Ustava, Biblije do uvjeta bankovnih poslovanja, a koje sve manje razumijemo i na koje uopće nemamo utjecaja. Apsurd i besmislenost dodatno su naglašeni prostornim instalacijama sastavljenim od simbola križa i grba, koji repetitivnim pokretima nedvosmisleno asociraju na pokvareni mehanizam. U organizaciji Punkta za umetnički eksperiment i Narodne biblioteke Srbije 20.12.2012. u 18h u prostoru Narodne biblioteke Srbije otvara se međunarodna izložba “Knjiga – umjetnički objekt 2”.

Sunčano uz mogućnost razbojništva

Projekt ‘Sunčano uz mogućnost razbojništva’ započeo je 2010. godine kao odgovor na vremenske prognoze koje uz klasičnu prognozu sadrže i biometeorološki segment, odnosno predviđaju i zdravstveno te emocionalno stanje građana tijekom narednih dana.

Status podataka: Kompozicija IV je drugi iz serije interaktivnih pejzaža.

Za ovaj rad kreirana je baza podataka sa zapisnicima sa svih sjednica 6. saziva Hrvatskog sabora, te se iz te baze povlače podaci na temelju kojih se generira pejzaž.

Ovisno o zastupljenosti rasprava iz  gospodarstva, znanosti, ekologije i prirode, zdravlja, sporta i kulture generiraju se elementi pejzaža. Tako kamenje predstavlja kulturu, ptice sport, brda gospodarstvo, znanost planine…

Animacija se osvježava svakih 30 sekundi te se generira novi pejzaž.

Mihael Giba is a Croatian intermedia artist, who is presenting the first solo exhibition of his work in Slovenia. His art focuses on the area of data visualization, and he has developed special computer software that serves as the basis for his installations. The common element in Giba’s projects is their mapping of both individual and global social phenomena.

The exhibition TRUST ME I TRUST YOU presents an installation of this same name, which is composed of a series of five artist books with the same formal character and elegance as the artist’s conceptual poetry. In this work, legal documents and international agreements signed by the Croatian government have been redesigned by Giba in his own artistic language so as to act as a transfer between viewers and the language of bureaucracy. Besides the books, the exhibition is rounded out by a projection that categorizes data from a session of parliament into such groupings as sports, culture, economics, etc., and presents them as images of a digital landscape.

The artist’s chosen mode of mapping derives from his desire to create a dialogue between the state and its citizens that is as direct as possible. Through the visualization of data, he moves from the concrete to the abstract only to return again to the concrete. Such movement Lev Manovich has described as the real challenge of data art, which, he says, “is not about how to map some abstract and impersonal data into something meaningful and beautiful” but rather “how to represent the personal subjective experience of a person living in a data society.”[1]

Mihael Giba (b. 1985, Varaždin) received his degree in painting from the Academy of Art at the University of Split, where he is currently employed as a senior assistant in electronic painting and digital photography. He is a member of the international art network Zebra, which founded the exhibition space Greta in Zagreb. He regularly exhibits his work in Croatia in both solo and group shows. In 2010, in collaboration with Dalibor Martinis, he presented his touring project Global Picture in Slovenia.

Vjerujte mi vjerujem vam

This work is about trust that we all as citizens have given to politicians. It consists of two books placed on the stands. The first book is actually an Accession Treaty: Treaty concerning the accession of the Republic of Croatia to European Union, and the second book is the Agreement on mutual relations between the shareholders of INA – so-called The contract on sale of INA. Common to these documents is that the government was refusing to publish these documents.
In this Accession Treaty I am color coding the word “Croatia” in red-white-blue and the words “European Union” in blue and yellow, just in positions where they are located in the original treaty, and all other text is deleted. In the INA contract I am statistically showing how many times characters are repeating in one row. Visualizing the information from the original documents I am showing how I read these documents from the stand of view as an ordinary citizen with a minimal knowledge of legal chicanery, various legal and economic terms.
Do ordinary citizens that politicians represent must have such knowledge and control their every move, or just to trust politicians? In surveys that Croatian internet portals took among their readers after numerous scandals and in an election year the results are lost trust in politicians. When we give our trust to the people that must represent us in matters that concern all of us as citizens of this country do we need knowledge to read legal documents, or this kind of knowledge is unnecessary?
Trust me I trust you.

This is the third composition in the series ‘Data Status’ in which Giba explores data visualization.
The work consists of computer software that processes data from the website of the Ministry of Interior Affairs (Crime in the city of Zagreb) and the web site of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (information on the weather forecast of Zagreb) and generates a prediction of crime for the city of Zagreb. Visualization exists in the domain of augmented reality and interacts with the viewer by generating crime forecasts for the City of Zagreb based on collected data.

The changes in that state is communicated to the public via 7 colors. In each city GLOBAL PICTURE inhabits local urban site which has already been established as a location of certain urban significance. The daily changes are dependent on a set of parameters taken from daily online reports on the global economy, stock markets, disasters, health, international relations/conflicts, civil rights, ecology and media. 7 states from bad to excellent are turned into the colors: from blue, turquoise, green, yellow, orange, and red to purple. Every 20 minutes a central software performs keyword-based search on the internet and after analysis of collected data via internet database delivers necessary information regarding current state of GLOBAL PICTURE to on-site software applications. Those software applications then using different LED hardware interfaces are displaying current color.

The project Global Picture-Sensor of Human Condition started in 3 cities in Croatia (in 2010. will include other cities in Europe), in Rijeka on December 8th 2009, as part of the international exhibition 3rd Quadrilateral Biennale.

Data status: Composition II

Data status: Composition II is the title of the work that is currently on view in Gallery of Fine Arts in Split, Croatia. DSCII is custom software driven animation that visualizes news published in Croatian daily newspapers, collected on newspaper web portals. News are grouped in separate categories like sports, culture & arts, politic & economy, lifestyle & health and presented on visualization as parts of landscape – trees, birds, hills, clouds and flowers. Number of this landscape elements depends on number of news published. Visualization is refreshed every 20 seconds.

Exhibition: Participation, not simulation

Openning of the exhibition Participation, not simulation. Participation, not simulation is the title of the exhibition that will present 37 artists, all of them employed as teaching stuff on Arts Academy in Split on Visual Arts department.

Data status: Composition I

Data Status: Composition I is the title of the work that through custom made software and Facebook application collects information about users on Facebook. Using an automated hardware system, user information that is collected with Facebook application is visualized on canvases, in real time, in front of the visitors of the exhibition. In this case the data that is visualized is the percentage of female and male friends of users on Facebook. Left side of canvases represents female friends and right side male friends. On the projection in other room, custom made software is downloading and showing data about current user but it doesn’t show what this data is about.  This photos are taken on the first day of exhibition and as exhibition will go on, there will be more data painted o canvases.

Data Status: Composition I – technical description:

1. Facebook application

Every user on Facebook can add Fejssken application that is custom made for this project. This application is gathering data about user –  percentage of male and female friends, number of photo albums created by user, number of photos that user is tagged on, number of events…. Then this data is stored in xml file with unique user PIN, but without any data that can identify the user.

2. Processing

In exhibition space, visitors that have approved access to Fejssken application on Facebook can enter their unique user PIN generated by  Fejssken in application written in Processing that is running on computer on exhibition. If correct unique user PIN is entered, this application is connecting to web server and downloads xml file with data about this specific user.  When the data about user is loaded application is sending part of this data to Flash animation in xml form and another part over bluetooth connection to Arduino BT board.

3. Flash animation

This Flash animation is visualizing data received in xml document on projection on the wall in form of numbers and different color for different data.

4. Arduino

Arduino in this case, can receive data about percentage of female friends from this user that is painted on the left side of canvases, and percentage of male friends that is painted on the right side of painting. When arduino receives commands from Processing software over bluetooth connection, it executes programmed actions. This actions are starting two motors on each side of canvases that are moving paint roller on canvases. Motors can be activated in both directions, and depending on percentage of friends paint roller is moved on specific height in circular movement. For example, if some user haves 100% of female friends, paint roller, when is on the left side of canvases, will paint from bottom left to top center of canvases, if this percentage is 50% percent, then it will paint to half way to top.

When all actions are completed, paint roller is returned to starting position, and other user can enter code. It takes about 5 minutes to paint data for one user.

The daily changes are dependent on a set of parameters taken from daily online reports on the global economy, stock markets, disasters, health, international relations/conflicts, civil rights, ecology and media. 7 states from bad to excellent are turned into the colors: from blue, turquoise, green, yellow, orange, and red to purple. Every 20 minutes a central software performs keyword-based search on the internet and after analysis of collected data via internet database delivers necessary information regarding current state of GLOBAL PICTURE to on-site software applications. Those software applications then using different LED hardware interfaces are displaying current color.

ZADAR
A corresponding ever-changing color appears on the round screen of the Sun, an urban site with a big LED monitor built into the pavement in the port of Zadar (project by architect Niko Bašić).

German political theorist Hannah Arendt used the term “human condition” to describe the joy, terror, humor and other emotions associated with being and existence. Let’s suppose there is a way to measure the human condition and to “paint” its global picture. Would the continuous presence of such a picture influence people to act differently, to feel more compassion for their fellow humans, to care more about their well-being?

Project GLOBAL PICTURE spreads the network of sensors in various cities in Europe in order to bring the present state of humanity to as many people as possible. The changes in that state is communicated to the public via 7 colors. In each city GLOBAL PICTURE inhabits local urban site which has already been established as a location of certain urban significance. The daily changes are dependent on a set of parameters taken from daily online reports on the global economy, stock markets, disasters, health, international relations/conflicts, civil rights, ecology and media. 7 states from bad to excellent are turned into the colors: from blue, turquoise, green, yellow, orange, and red to purple. Every 20 minutes a central software performs keyword-based search on the internet and after analysis of collected data via internet database delivers necessary information regarding current state of GLOBAL PICTURE to on-site software applications. Those software applications then using different LED hardware interfaces are displaying current color.

The project Global Picture-Sensor of Human Condition started in 3 cities in Croatia (in 2010. will include other cities in Europe), in Rijeka on December 8th 2009, as part of the international exhibition 3rd Quadrilateral Biennale.

RIJEKA
An existent large globe-shaped object on the roof of a building in Rijeka harbor representing the logo of the Transadria company, serves as an object for visualizations of changes in the global picture of humanity. The globe is lit (by color LED scanners) in a certain color which changes constantly.
ZADAR
A corresponding ever-changing color appears on the round screen of the Sun, an urban site with a big LED monitor built into the pavement in the port of Zadar (project by architect Niko Bašić).
ZAGREB
Pavilion/09 built by Studio Njirić+architects as a temporary urban site was lit up in a corresponding ever-changing color. The image of the 3 simultaneous sites were projected on 3 video projection screens in the pavilion.

Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb.

T-HTnagrada@MSU.hr is joint project, the annual award for the prestigious works of the Croatian contemporary art. The competition is organised for the third time, and the awarded works of the competition will make a base of the T-HT Collection that will be exhibited in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb.

On this exhibition Giba is participating with his work “How are you today?”.

How are you today? (KSD ?4.0)“ Is the final extension of work “How are you today?”.
This work consists from canvases, automated hardware system and “How are you today?” software. Every 20 minutes, software driven hardware system is connecting to internet and collects and analyse data. After the data is being processed it is sent to automatic robot system in form of percentage of good and bad news, and regarding to amount of percentage, robot is painting a line onto canvas (e.g. for 30% of positive news, hardware is painting a line 30 cm long.)
After the canvas is being fully covered with painted lines it is replaced with new canvas.
This work is created with Processing software and Arduino Pro Board.
On exhibition in Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, software “How are you today?” was purposely slow down from every 20 minutes of reaction to every 60 minutes because of the length of the exhibition and limited number of canvases.

Rijeka | Global picture

With site specific installation artist Dalibor Martinis in collaboration with Mihael Giba and Ivan Marusic Klif, will illuminate the iron globe on the top of the Transadrija building in Rijeka haurbor.

Work Global picture is relying on the daily reports from the global economy, stock exchanges, disasters, health, international relations and conflicts, civil liberties, environmental protection and the media, which are  providing data to measure the current state of humanity, and depending on those reports software is changing color of the iron globe on the top of the building.

Using similar sensors and software, Global picture will be launched simultaneously in Zagreb and Zadar.

Work, “How are you today?” Visualizes data collected with a web search engine Google.
I have designed software that collects information from top seven Croatian web news portals and visualizes current day status – positive or negative day.
Data that software is collecting presents search results for 10 negative and 10 positive keywords (e.g. death, murder, love, happiness …) on top seven Croatian news portals. Data that software has collected is used as ratio (e.g. 30% negative news and 70% positive news) and stored in database of days.
Day status is represented with ratio of red and green color – most common colors in statistical graphs. Data is represented on two flat screen monitors – first and bigger one is showing current day visualization, and smaller one is showing in loop number of days I define in the past.
Idea came from mass media power to design reality.
“How are you today?” Is a gadget for people who are easyly influenced with media and have lost their own critical thinking and accept all that is served in newspapers and TV. This work stereotypes society and provokes it to confront the influences and to criticize and question those influences, particularly from mass media.
Since the day that work is in function (12.1.2009) it is continuously storing data in the day database. From the collected data I generate computer renderings of a certain number of days and then I transfer those visualizations in the form of pictures / painting installation and present them with the “How are you today?” software.

Canvases are arranged on the floor of the exhibition space by virtual simulation in 3D space. Computer assigned
to canvases visual composition based on their position inside space.
Visual content that is assigned to canvases is consisting from few hundreds of files left in computer memory after
internet surfing (temporary internet files). Because of huge amount of data – composition is abstract.
Process of positioning of canvases and assigning compositions to those canvases is completely run by computer, and after that I only reproduce those canvases with compositions in tangible reality in a form of painting installation.
When visitor enters exhibition space, he receives on his cell phone a short video of creation process over Bluetooth connection.

In my work I have combined space, digital technologies and information, and the end product is a picture. Image at first glance looks like an abstract composition located within the space, but works from viewers require more than casual view or pure visual pleasure – “Information “requires thinking and understanding (and acceptance) of all the opportunities that artists have today.Given that technology affects peoples’ lives and changes them on everyday basis,through my work I study influence of technology on the arts, the possibility of technology in art, as well as its boundaries. Interference of digital technology in the process of creation of work in traditional technique such as painting there comes to depersonalization of me as an artist. Literally
I let machine take over the creative process during the formation of composition.
Works are formed in an interaction with the architecture.Based on the assumption that the architecture is in some way illusionistic shaping of reality, then we have in those spaces, an opportunity to recreate our own reality.The work is placed in dialogue with the space and the information in it. I use the information of space and with the simulations in digital reality stop that information on canvases. At first glance it seems that it is a pure abstract composition without reference to the appearance world. To the eye of the observer, it is difficult to read any of the starting points in figuration. However the starting points of work are in figuration – vast amount of visual information (pictures,texts …) that every day consciously or less consciously entered into the memory of artist and computer.The process of creation of work completely takes place in virtual reality, so until the end product (picture) there is no physical evidence of the process. Equally the life of today’s modern man takes place within the real and the virtual world (my space, Facebook, e-mail …) and also my work – in the process of creation exist in virtual reality, and later it is presented in a physical form in palpable reality.

Process begins by collecting information only in digital format – photos, texts, web pages … This information is placed in a 3D space, where information is circling through 3d model of architectural space. Canvases are through the simulation automatically placed in the space, and when they take the position the computer automatically assigns them “information” in the form of art composition made up of previously collected information / documents.
Collected documents / information is mixed-up by computer and incorporated in the virtual space. Because of huge quantity of documents / information, the composition becomes abstract.
Work is presented as a painting installation in space, i.e. physical replica of virtual compositions.

PORTRAIT

TECHNIUQUE: ACRYLIC ON PLASTERBOARDS

This series of paintings on plasterboard called “PORTRAIT” consists of pictures that were painted with white paint on a white background, and only visible in these images are reliefs that are incurred when applying the paint. Reliefs that can be seen are embossed numbers – codes, which represent the personal identification numbers of a person and make the person bureaucratically recognizable.
Codes were drawn from Croatia’s bureaucratic system and it is important that those are the codes that all Croatian citizens have from their birth until death. Some of the codes are: national identification number, the number of health insurance, passport number, national identification number of academic citizen, etc. Paintings also consist of changing codes, but codes that can be tracked in a bureaucratic system: numbers of bank accounts, student identification number, credit card number, membership card numbers, etc.
As the main difference from classical portrait painting in which the physical appearance of a person, which remains identical through the year, regardless of changes in life of portrayed person, these portraits change with changes in life portraits of people. Of course those changes are not the physical changes on the picture,
but the codes that are contained in the portrait give us the possibility of checking the current portrait/physical appearance of that person.
