SC Gallery, Savska 25, Zagreb
13.10.2023. – 28.10.2023.
exhibition opening:
Friday, 13.10.2023. at 7 p.m
The exhibition Inside The Black Cube by multimedia artist Mihael Giba is part of the project of the same name started in 2021, which consists of online workshops and presentations, and now also an exhibition in the SC Gallery. The exhibition and the project were created according to the curatorial concept of Mirna Rul. The central part of the exhibition is an interactive installation – an animated projection on papers representing empty EEG reports, which is produced by a computer program imitating the subjects’ brain waves. The visuals in the gallery space continuously change depending on the interaction with the visitors, whose emotional states are read by the camera at the entrance to the gallery.
“The project name “Inside The Black Cube” is a paraphrase and repetition of O’Doherty’s concepts with an ironic twist. Just like the white walls of the gallery separate the world of art from the rest of the world, the “black cube” – evoking the computer case or its screen – implies a distinction between the real and the virtual world. However, unlike the white walls that the members of Bauhaus used to ensure the uninterrupted artistic experience, isolating themselves in the white cube without distractions, in this black cube, distraction is favoured. Moreover, it is inherent to the virtual world and an essential part of internet art. Manipulating recipients, diverting attention, suggestibility induced by special visual effects, and playing with the viewer’s perception are just some of the “abilities” of our black cube. It’s a space for controlling the mind through the medium of art.“
