The new, three-year exhibition cycle of the “Lamparna” Gallery titled PNEUMATICS continues with an exhibition – web installation by multimedia artist Mihael Giba called “Presence”, on Friday, November 29th at 8 PM, which will be opened by Damir Stojnić, artistic director of L.A.E. XXI and the “Lamparna” Gallery.
Since 2021, artist Mihael Giba has been exploring visitor presence in galleries and museums through a series of works titled “Presence”.
“In the installation being premiered at the DKC ‘Lamparna’ gallery, the artist has, in his own words, developed a web application that generates gradient animations in real-time within the RGB color system on the web, using numbers from visitors’ IP addresses. Each visitor’s IP address is logged in a database, with these address numbers controlling the visualization on the website. Essentially, IP addresses are identifiers that enable information transfer between network devices, contain location information, and facilitate communication between devices.
“The RGB color system is one of the most well-known and widespread in the world. As an additive system, it combines red, green, and blue light to create colors we see on TV screens, computer monitors, and smartphones. Each color channel is expressed in a range from 0 (lowest saturation) to 255 (highest saturation). Since the minimum and maximum values for RGB colors and IP addresses are expressed in the same range, using IP numbers as a measure of color saturation within the RGB system enables the creation of unique gradient combinations shaped by specific IP addresses.
“Simplified, a key feature of Giba’s work is assigning personal gradient combinations (shades) to each visitor of his web page through the application. These gradients are then transferred by the artist to images made with spray paint on plexiglass and plastic foils, combined with screens that generate visitors’ gradients in real-time.
“Through the description of Giba’s installations, a tendency for communication and interaction with visitors is evident. He does not leave this to chance or the inertia of mere presence, but provokes involvement, colloquially ‘presence of spirit and body’. His installation is illuminated by ordinary and UV light, on which some images react by emitting light through previously painted gradients, creating an imitation of screen effects.
“Exhibition visitors are invited to become active participants by scanning a registration QR code, directly influencing the visualizations and the process of creating this web art installation. In this way, the artist connects digitally recorded presence with physical installation, translating visitor interaction into constantly changing visual facts. Through this synergy between digital information and artistic expression, Giba creates a continuously evolving work,” writes Damir Stojnić in the exhibition catalog.
Mihael Giba’s exhibition at the “Lamparna” Gallery, co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and Media, can be viewed until December 12th, Monday through Friday from 11 AM to 3 PM.
